- The National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS) reported an estimated 1,400 child fatalities in 2002. This translates to a rate of 1.98 children per 100,000 children in the general population.
- In 2002, one or both parents were involved in 79 percent of child abuse or neglect fatalities.
- Most States define perpetrators of child abuse or neglect as parents and other caretakes, such as relatives, babysitters, and foster parents, who have maltrated a child.
- Child fatalities are the most tragic consequences of maltreatment. Approximately 1,200 children died of abuse or neglect in the year 2000 – a rate of 1.71 children per 100,000 children in the population.
