  1. The National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS) reported an estimated 1,400 child fatalities in 2002. This translates to a rate of 1.98 children per 100,000 children in the general population.
  2. In 2002, one or both parents were involved in 79 percent of child abuse or neglect fatalities.
  3. Most States define perpetrators of child abuse or neglect as parents and other caretakes, such as relatives, babysitters, and foster parents, who have maltrated a child.
  4. Child fatalities are the most tragic consequences of maltreatment. Approximately 1,200 children died of abuse or neglect in the year 2000 – a rate of 1.71 children per 100,000 children in the population.
