The Halloween Carnival in October of 1999 marks the moment when the relationship between Delta Kappa Delta and the Lincoln Center was ignited. Lincoln Center is the Boys & Girls Club of College Station, Texas where the Sisters of Delta Kappa Delta first began volunteering to mentor elementary and junior high students. Initially, the National Founding Mothers found Lincoln Center through their Annual Halloween Carnival where the children would come for a safe alternative to trick-or-treating.
Many Sisters became involved in the Child Lures program in association with Lincoln Center where the kids would learn about dealing with strangers and what to do in different kinds of emergencies. The foundation of our relationship became stronger as we mentored the children each afternoon.
Our interaction allowed the personalities of the jokers, intellectuals, free spirits, and artists to come to life. Even though we mentored on scholastic ideals, these kids taught us how to be better individuals, role models, and about true compassion. The laughter, energy, and spirit at Lincoln Center was something each Sister at Alpha Chapter can feel in her heart but cannot be put into words.
The impact that Lincoln Center has had on Delta Kappa Delta is indescribable. Lincoln Center is one of the reasons why our service focus is dedicated to education. The program coordinators and directors at Lincoln Center truly inspired each Sister each time she walked through those doors. Their passion to make a difference in each child’s life and their will to be a positive influence and role model inspired each of the Sisters to work harder and truly appreciate the service we do.
*This passage is dedicated in memory of Neel Donovan. Neel was the Program Director at Lincoln Center. From the National Founding Mothers to the Sisters in Epsilon Line, his influence and dedication to the children at Lincoln Center inspired us all to work harder toward our service goals. The demise of Neel is a deep loss felt by all the Sisters at Alpha Chapter who had the privilege to work with him and experience his encouragement and inspiration. We will miss your passion, smile, camaraderie, and your laughter. Thank you Neel for all that you did……
